- The Homeless Advocacy Project
Since 1988, HAP has provided free legal assistance to individuals who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. Volunteer and staff legal advocates assist clients with a range of issues, including tenant/landlord disputes, problems with food stamps and General Assistance, applying for SSI/SSDI disability benefits, immigration issues, arrest warrants & family law, towed cars, replacing lost IDs and other documents; additionally HAP social service volunteers and staff provide referrals for shelters, rehab programs and other social services in the city. Most volunteer legal advocates are either law students or attorneys doing pro bono work. Most social service volunteers are licensed social workers/psychologists or social work students.
